Yousif Alharbi Crafting Saudi Arabia’s Cultural Renaissance

Yousif Alharbi Crafting Saudi Arabia’s Cultural Renaissance Director of the Culture and Arts Association in Dammam, Author, Journalist, and Cultural, Arts Consulting  by Alhanouf Mohammed Alrowaili Yousif Alharbi, a prominent Saudi cultural consultant, writer, and organiser of major arts festivals, stands as a cornerstone in Saudi Arabia’s flourishing cultural evolution. For years, he has collaborated with talented individuals across diverse disciplines, all while advancing the Kingdom’s Vision 2030—a blueprint for cultural and economic transformation. With an illustrious career spanning journalism, art education, and cultural management, Alharbi has become a beacon of creativity, cultural exchange, and artistic heritage preservation. His profound contributions, both locally and internationally, have cemented his status as a trailblazer in the Kingdom’s burgeoning arts scene. A Journalist’s Journey into the Arts Alharbi’s foray into journalism began in 2004, marking the genesis of his remarkable career as a writer and art critic. Fueled by an unrelenting passion for cultural discourse, he penned numerous articles on visual arts and cultural issues for leading Saudi publications, including Al-Watan. His writings resonated widely, addressing the interplay between art and societal transformation. Notably, Alharbi founded an online platform exclusively dedicated to visual arts—a pioneering initiative that explored global artistic trends and fostered in-depth cultural dialogue. This endeavour not only expanded his influence but also laid the groundwork for his transition into academia and consultancy, where his expertise would shape the Kingdom’s cultural policies. From Educator to Cultural Visionary Alharbi’s transition from art educator to cultural consultant was a seamless evolution rather than a career shift. “Art education was my gateway to understanding cultural and societal needs,” he reflects. His classroom experience, which nurtured creativity and critical thinking, became the foundation of his later work in cultural management. Today, Alharbi collaborates with cultural institutions to develop initiatives that integrate art into public life. His consultancy focuses on cultural policy, the promotion of Saudi artists, and the development of artistic infrastructure. For him, consultancy extends beyond advisory work—it is about inspiring new generations of artists and cultural leaders. A Multifaceted Leader in the Arts One of Alharbi’s distinguishing traits is his ability to seamlessly juggle multiple roles. As a consultant, writer, and festival organiser, he has consistently delivered impactful results. His projects range from curating art exhibitions and organising large-scale festivals to authoring thought-provoking weekly columns on the intersection of art and culture. “I love what I do, and that passion fuels my ability to balance everything,” Alharbi explains. His meticulous planning and unwavering dedication to creating unique cultural experiences have made him a respected figure both locally and internationally. Pioneering Cultural Discourse Through Literature Alharbi’s literary contributions are equally groundbreaking. His upcoming book, Artistic and Cultural Tourism, explores how tourism can preserve cultural heritage, promote the arts, and foster meaningful connections. The book aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which emphasises tourism as a pillar of economic diversification. Previously, Alharbi authored the first Arabic book on video art, published in 2017 and revised in 2020. This seminal work not only introduced the medium to the Arab world but also established a framework for its appreciation. The book’s success spurred the creation of the International Video Art Forum, a platform that bridges Saudi artists with the global arts community, fostering cross-cultural collaboration. Shaping a Sustainable Cultural Economy Alharbi’s philosophy underscores the symbiosis between art and economics. In his second book, he examines how cultural assets can drive economic growth, drawing parallels with global hubs like Paris and New York. He envisions Saudi Arabia leveraging its artistic heritage to create a sustainable cultural economy that benefits both creators and communities. “Art is a powerful economic engine,” Alharbi asserts, urging young cultural entrepreneurs to innovate and build on the unique qualities of Saudi culture rather than replicate foreign models. His advice is clear: “Listen, study, innovate, and collaborate. Flexibility and patience are key to success.” A Holistic Approach to Cultural Management Inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration form the cornerstone of Alharbi’s approach to cultural management. His curated events integrate multiple art forms—music, theatre, film, and visual arts—into cohesive cultural experiences that resonate with diverse audiences. This multidisciplinary ethos not only enriches Saudi Arabia’s cultural dialogue but also bridges gaps between local and international communities. An Architect of Saudi Arabia’s Cultural Future Yousif Alharbi’s unwavering commitment to the arts has made him a pivotal figure in Saudi Arabia’s cultural renaissance. His contributions as a writer, consultant, and organiser exemplify the transformative power of art in shaping societal and economic landscapes. As the Kingdom continues its cultural and economic transformation under Vision 2030, Alharbi’s work serves as a testament to the profound impact of creativity and cultural exchange. He is not merely an observer of Saudi culture—he is its architect, forging connections that inspire and innovate for generations to come.

What began as a simple passion for sharing his perspectives on fashion, design, and lifestyle has blossomed into a career that connects him with a global audience and some of the world’s most prestigious luxury brands. Instagram, for Taleb, became the perfect platform to merge creativity with opportunity, allowing him to collaborate with like-minded individuals and share his unique vision. Collaborating with iconic brands such as Dior, Hermès, and Bulgari requires a thoughtful approach. Taleb focuses on striking a delicate balance between authenticity and high-quality visuals, ensuring his content resonates with both the brands and his audience. He believes that storytelling is at the heart of every partnership and works meticulously to align his work with the ethos of each brand.  At the same time, he injects a personal touch, creating content that feels genuine and emotionally engaging. According to Taleb, consistency, attention to detail, and an understanding of a brand’s values are crucial in attracting and maintaining partnerships with high-end labels. Transitioning from a traditional job to becoming a full-time content creator was a significant leap of faith for Taleb. The move came with its challenges, particularly the uncertainty of entrepreneurship. The shift from a structured work environment to managing his own schedule, projects, and income was a steep learning curve.  However, this change has been immensely rewarding, granting him the freedom to explore new creative outlets and pursue passion projects at his own pace. It has given him a renewed appreciation for flexibility and self-management, as well as a fresh perspective on achieving a work-life balance. Taleb envisioned the cafe as more than just a place to grab coffee—it was designed to stimulate the senses and offer a cohesive experience. Every detail, from the choice of materials to the lighting and layout, was meticulously curated to create an inviting and memorable atmosphere, reflecting his passion for thoughtful design. In a crowded market, Taleb sets himself apart by crafting content that feels both luxurious and accessible. Tim Smith: A Photographer’s Lifelong Journey into the Hutterite Community

Tim SmithA Photographer’s Lifelong Journey into the Hutterite Community By Alhanouf Mohammed Alrowaili Photography is a great way to document great and important projects or events that matter in the world, especially if it’s related to history, culture or heritage. Tim Smith is a documentary photographer based in Brandon, Manitova. He presents an exhibition based on  his work photographing the insular, communal Hutterites of North America over the past fifteen years. What began as a simple encounter with members of Deerboine Hutterite Colony in the spring of 2009 has grown into a multi-layer long-term documentation of Hutterite culture. The Hutterites, communal anabaptists, immigrated to Canada from the United States in the early 1900s, following centuries of upheaval and migration through Europe beginning in the Tyrol region of Austria. The past century in Canada and the United States has been one of the most peaceful and successful periods of their history, yet brings its own challenges to their culture.  His work has been supported by several grants and has been exhibited throughout North America, Europe, Asia, The Middle East, Australia and Africa. Recent exhibitions include the 2023 Xposure International Photo Festival in the United Arab Emirates, Freelens Gallery in Hamburg and FotoForum Innsbruck.  The project was also chosen for the 2022 DongGang International Photo Festival – Artist of the Year solo exhibition. In addition to exhibiting, excerpts from my Hutterite work have been published widely in print and online. This body of work represents one of the longest and broadest photographic documentations of the Hutterites ever produced.  Smith is a supporter of the Coalition for Women in Journalism. Portions of Smith’s Hutterite work have been graciously supported by four Manitoba Arts Council grants and a Canada Council for the Arts grant. 1) Why did you pick these projects to cover? I’m from where I live now, and I’m from a small community in the middle of the Canadian prairies, so there is lots of farming, and not around where I live. And I was looking for some sort of long-term project that I could take on when I accidentally got introduced to a Hutterite colony that lives about 20 minutes from where I live.  So, I went out there to take some pictures and I just became really interested in their culture and I wanted to learn more, so I just kept going back, thinking maybe I would spend six months, a year or maybe two years on a long-term project. And now it’s been more than 14 years that I’ve been doing it. 2) Are all your projects done in the same locations, or you have to travel? I wouldn’t say that I’ve traveled most of my work around the world. You know, I have traveled a little bit, but most of my work that I do and that I’m known for, I do very close to home. So mostly in Manitoba, Canada. 3) What have you seen in them that captured your camera for many years? Because they do live very differently than I do and most people in mainstream society, but the more I got to know their culture, I became more interested in finding the connections that people would see between their community and our community, because I think connection is so important in the world right now. We seem to be becoming increasingly disconnected, especially after COVID-19, when we couldn’t visit our loved ones. We were stuck in our own little worlds. And that has done a lot of damage to the idea of community and connection. I think we forget how important that is. The Hutterites offer such an amazing example of community and connection among them. So, I really admire that, and I’m really drawn towards documenting that. 4) Have you become close with them, like backgrounds, personal stories and what happened to them before and after COVID-19? Yeah, absolutely. You know, a lot of the colonies that I visit are within an hour’s drive from where I live. And over the years, these people have become my close friends, and they’re very important to me. Beyond the project, I love visiting them. Every day, I get to spend time socializing or photographing. And one of the reasons I’ve spent so long doing that is to ensure that my documentation is as broad as possible, telling a complete story about Hutterite culture as possible without leaving anything out. 5) Did your documentaries change anything in their lives? No, I think if any, the Hutterites are very self-sufficient and very, what’s called a closed society, so they live apart. And a key aspect of their survival over the last 500 years is their ability to be apart from mainstream society. So, this isn’t a project where, you know, sometimes as journalists, we tell stories that need to be told, that can help someone, that can shine light on an abuse or on an important topic. This is absolutely not one of those stories. The Hutterites do not need me for anything. If anything, you know, I think in the beginning I thought that they would put up with my intrusion and my curiosity, especially nowadays with social media. The Hutterites are very good at telling their own story and stuff, and they do it beautifully while still holding on to their own privacy and stuff like that. So, I wouldn’t say that my work has changed anything in the community. And I wouldn’t expect it to at all, but I am grateful that a lot of people know about my work and have been very kind about it and enjoy seeing representations of themselves out in the world. 6) Do you believe that journalism still has the power of change? Sure. Yeah, I absolutely do believe in it. I believe in storytelling. And I think that storytelling is such an important part of human culture, whether it’s through music, art, journalism. I think there are so many ways of storytelling and I think journalism is

A Conversation with Josh Raiffe: Brooklyn’s Visionary Glass Artist

Josh Raiffe  Brooklyn’s Visionary Glass Artist by Diya Vora  Glass’s beauty lies in its visual appeal and profound symbolic meaning. It represents a delicate balance between sturdiness and transparency, strength and fragility. Whether seen in a shimmering chandelier or a simple container catching sunlight, glass serves as a reminder of the art of transformation and the elegance in simplicity. Josh Raiffe, a Brooklyn-based glass artist, is renowned for his innovative creations that blur the lines between art and fashion. His journey began with a family deeply rooted in art and design. Encouraged by the women in his family, particularly his mother, an artist herself, Josh was nurtured in an environment where creativity thrived.  His childhood was filled with “art days,” where surfaces were covered with paper, and he and his siblings explored various artistic mediums. His grandmother, a famous teddy bear designer, instilled in him the importance of quality and craftsmanship, a value he carries into his work today. Josh often designs his pieces during the creative process itself. While he may sometimes have a solid design in mind, which he sketches out in multiple styles, he often lets curiosity guide him. He experiments, folds glass in unexpected ways, or chops it up to see the resulting patterns. His designs can be influenced by his state of mind, his experiences, or simply his pursuit of beauty. Art, design, and fashion intersect and influence each other uniquely. For Josh, art expresses the soul, emotion, and mind, while design’s value lies in its quality. Fashion, as he sees it, is a subset of art, defined by its performative aspect when displayed on a body. It becomes a collaboration between the creator and the wearer, with the latter playing a vital role in how the piece is perceived. Josh has no formal background in fashion. Instead, the fashion world called to him, and he embraced it with open arms. He is candid about his dislike for the rampant celebrity worship in the industry, emphasizing the importance of judging people on their character rather than their social status, wealth, or reputation. Glassblowing, an art form steeped in ancient traditions and modern techniques, has been central to Josh’s work. He adapts tools to suit his practice, like his custom giant tungsten rod, which helps him create seamless designs. This innovation exemplifies his dedication to pushing boundaries in his craft. Josh honed his skills at the Tyler School of Art, an immersive four-year program where he spent countless hours perfecting his technique. This rigorous training ignited his passion and seriousness for his craft, setting him on a path of relentless creativity. His time at Pilchuck Glass School further broadened his skills, albeit in a less structured environment. Among his most memorable collaborations was one with fashion designer Kate Barton. Their creative exchange involved back-and-forth revisions, resulting in designs that seamlessly blended their artistic visions. Another standout project was with artist Evan Vogel, using UV-reactive glass to create a glowing, otherworldly piece. His collaboration with Viya Jewellery elevated his work to new heights by incorporating diamonds and gold, transforming his glass bags into exquisite pieces of wearable art. Though he no longer teaches, Josh reflects fondly on his teaching days, which connected him with people who later became clients. If he could give advice to aspiring artists, it would be to focus on creating work that resonates personally rather than seeking validation from others. He emphasizes being one’s harshest critic and staying true to one’s vision. Glass in fashion offers vast potential for growth. While Josh primarily focuses on glass bags, he envisions its application in diverse ways. However, he acknowledges the challenges of working with such a fragile material. Social media has been instrumental in promoting his work, allowing him to reach audiences independently. He advises artists to be fearless and embrace the platform despite its demands. Josh dreams of creating timeless pieces that will endure for centuries, much like discovering treasures in an attic that tell stories of the past. He aspires to leave a legacy akin to brands like Tiffany, whose works remain iconic through generations. Currently, Josh handles every aspect of his business, from designing and blowing glass to managing social media and logistics. While he finds it manageable, he is ready to grow and delegate tasks. His ultimate goal is to establish his own glassblowing studio, tailored to his unique needs, enabling him to expand his creative horizons. For Josh Raiffe, the journey of shaping glass is as much about self-expression as it is about pushing the boundaries of what art, design, and fashion can achieve together. His work continues to captivate and inspire, reminding us of the enduring beauty and transformative power of glass. Maryam Aldoub’s journey is an inspiring narrative of balance, empowerment, and a deep commitment to values, proving that fashion can indeed be modest, elegant, and influential all at once.

Keeping It Real: How Khalifa Abel Balances Qatari Pride with Social Media Stardom

Keep It Real How Khalifa Abel Balances Qatari Pride with Social Media Stardom By Wajiha Naaz In less than three years, Khalifa Abel—known to his followers as 5haxy—has gained the admiration of thousands on social media, where his authentic storytelling and heartfelt celebration of Qatari culture shine through. Surprisingly, his path to becoming an influencer wasn’t premeditated. Today, Khalifa’s content captivates audiences worldwide with its authenticity, tradition, and his commitment to presenting an unfiltered version of himself. Khalifa’s journey began unintentionally, spurred by encouragement from friends and family. “My journey as an influencer was never intended,” Khalifa reflects. “My first appearance on social media came about when friends and family encouraged me to start posting. They loved the way I showcased the stories behind my pictures. Looking back, I’m grateful I listened to them—it turned out to be the best decision I could have made!” Khalifa’s content is distinct because of his profound connection to his heritage. His work honours Qatari traditions while blending in modern influences. “I am highly proud of my identity, and I love to show it whenever I can,” he says. “My inspiration often comes from my community, and I want to share a glimpse of that with the world.” Beyond cultural pride, Khalifa’s commitment to authenticity sets him apart. While many influencers create polished, seemingly perfect images, Khalifa’s posts reveal his true self—imperfections and all. “Authenticity comes naturally to me. I want my audience to see the real me, rather than a perfectly curated image,” he explains. His posts, whether he’s laughing, dancing, or simply going about his day, aim to show his genuine personality. “We have to leave the idea of ‘life must be perfect’ in every picture or video behind.” Although Khalifa enjoys participating in trends, he makes them his own by incorporating personal touches. He often chooses older Arabic songs, especially from 10 to 15 years ago, for his reels. While these tracks might not be trending, Khalifa reintroduces them with a sense of nostalgia, reinforcing a cultural connection. This same approach extends to his brand collaborations, where he always finds ways to represent his Qatari roots by including elements such as his homeland, pets, or traditional clothing. While his influence has grown rapidly, Khalifa’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. At one point, he was juggling a full-time job, a master’s degree, and his online presence. “It was challenging at times, but I found a way to balance everything without compromising my mental health,” he says.  “Taking photos and recording videos is a passion for me, and I enjoy it without any pressure.” A significant part of Khalifa’s appeal is his openness about his mental health journey. “I made sure I opened up to my audience about my struggles with depression and how I fight it every day,” he shares. This willingness to reveal his personal battles has enabled him to connect deeply with his audience. “Showing that I’m just like everyone else—a human who laughs, cries, and fights personal battles—helps my audience relate to me.” Of course, being in the public eye has its drawbacks, and Khalifa isn’t immune to online negativity. “With everyone being on social media, hate will come,” he admits. However, he has learned to protect his well-being by ignoring harmful comments. “Once I stopped reading them, my life has been better. Ultimately, it’s not about what others think; it’s about how you view yourself.” Khalifa’s pride in his Qatari heritage is evident in every post. His affinity for older Arabic songs, particularly those from the early 2010s, is a hallmark of his style. When partnering with brands, he ensures that each collaboration aligns with his personal values. “I always ask myself if I truly relate to the brand and if I use their products. If the answer is yes, I jump right in,” he says. Khalifa’s creative approach doesn’t end there—each reel is meticulously planned, with every 0.5 second carefully scripted to convey his vision. One unforgettable moment for Khalifa occurred at Hamad International Airport. On his way to Dubai, a stranger approached him to say that his openness about depression had helped them through their own struggles. “Hearing that my openness about mental health—especially a topic that’s often taboo for men in our culture—could prevent someone from harming themselves truly touched me,” he recalls. As he looks to the future, Khalifa’s ambitions are boundless. “My list of goals is endless. I dream of acting in a series, as I’m just as passionate about acting as I am about social media,” he reveals.  With a few film projects already in the works, Khalifa is eager for the right opportunity to expand his career into television. He also has exciting brand collaborations lined up for the near future. Khalifa’s advice to his followers is simple but powerful: “Keep working hard for your dreams and never give up. We all face obstacles in life, and we all fall at one point or another. The most important thing is how you pick yourself up and do it all over again. Also, remember to always be kind and help others. You will never be successful if you don’t help others be successful.” Khalifa Abel’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact of authenticity and cultural pride in today’s digital age. With his ever-growing influence, Khalifa continues to inspire and uplift his audience through genuine connections and a deep respect for his roots. As he looks forward to new adventures on screen and beyond, his followers can expect to see him reaching even greater heights. Khalifa Abel is a name to watch in the worlds of social media and television—bringing tradition, modernity, and inspiration together in an exceptional way.
