Long before artificial intelligence became one of the defining forces of the technology industry, Cristiano Amon was already working inside the company that helped make mobile computing possible. Today, as President and Chief Executive Officer of Qualcomm Incorporated, Amon is leading the company through another major transformation, one that reaches far beyond smartphones and wireless communications. Since becoming CEO on June 30, 2021, he has pushed Qualcomm toward a future built around intelligent computing across automobiles, personal computers, industrial systems, robotics, connected devices and artificial intelligence.

Amon’s connection with Qualcomm goes back to 1995, when he joined the company as an engineer. Amon believes this shift could fundamentally change how people interact with technology. In his vision, AI agents will increasingly understand context and intent rather than simply waiting for commands. Devices may become more capable of seeing, hearing and interpreting the surrounding environment, allowing technology to respond naturally to people. At its June 2026 Investor Day, Qualcomm raised its fiscal 2029 target for non handset revenue to 40 billion dollars, approximately double the previous target. It also established a goal of more than 15 billion dollars in data centre revenue by fiscal 2029 and outlined ambitions across automotive, industrial technology, networking, robotics and personal AI computing.

The move into data centres is especially significant because it places Qualcomm in a much broader competitive arena. For years, the company’s reputation was strongly associated with mobile processors and wireless intellectual property. Amon is now positioning Qualcomm across the entire computing continuum, from highly efficient devices at the edge to large scale cloud and data centre infrastructure. The objective is to create a company that can benefit regardless of where AI computation ultimately takes place.

The strategy is already producing measurable results. In Qualcomm’s fiscal third quarter of 2026, the company reported revenue of 9.9 billion dollars. Combined QCT automotive and Internet of Things revenue increased 28 percent year over year. Qualcomm also reported that automotive revenue had achieved its 23rd consecutive quarter of double digit annual growth. These figures suggest that diversification is becoming an increasingly meaningful contributor to the company’s financial performance.

Amon’s leadership philosophy is strongly connected to long term research and development. Qualcomm has invested more than 100 billion dollars in research and development over its history, according to the company, representing a central part of its ability to remain competitive through successive technology cycles. The company’s history began with CDMA and continued through 4G, 5G and increasingly sophisticated computing platforms. Amon has repeatedly emphasised that the ability to invest ahead of market demand is one of Qualcomm’s defining strengths.

That willingness to invest ahead of the market has influenced Qualcomm’s expansion into robotics and industrial artificial intelligence. These sectors are still developing, but Amon sees an opportunity to apply Qualcomm’s existing strengths in low power computing, connectivity and AI to machines operating in the physical world. Robots, smart cameras, industrial equipment and connected infrastructure could become important parts of the next wave of intelligent computing.

India has also become an important part of this broader AI strategy. In February 2026, Qualcomm announced plans to invest up to 150 million dollars through Qualcomm Ventures in Indian startups working in artificial intelligence, automotive, Internet of Things, robotics and mobile technology. The initiative reflects Amon’s view that AI innovation will develop across many countries and that Qualcomm can strengthen its position by working with emerging technology ecosystems.

The company’s strategic direction also reflects changing assumptions about the role of the smartphone. Smartphones remain enormously important to Qualcomm, but Amon does not view them as the only major computing platform of the future. Personal computers, smart glasses, vehicles, robots and industrial machines could all become intelligent connected devices. Qualcomm therefore seeks to provide the underlying technology across a wide range of products rather than depending on one category.

This diversification is particularly important because the semiconductor industry is inherently cyclical. Markets rise and fall, consumer demand changes and technological transitions can quickly alter competitive positions. A broader portfolio can reduce dependence on any single product category while allowing Qualcomm to take advantage of several technology trends simultaneously.

Amon’s leadership is consequently less about abandoning Qualcomm’s mobile heritage than about extending it. The company’s knowledge of wireless connectivity remains fundamental, but connectivity is increasingly being combined with computing and artificial intelligence. A smartphone can be an AI computer, a vehicle can become a connected intelligent machine and an industrial robot can operate as part of a larger digital network. Qualcomm’s ambition is to provide the technology that connects these pieces together.

The challenge ahead is considerable. Qualcomm faces intense competition across semiconductors, personal computing, automotive technology and AI infrastructure. It must also maintain its leadership in wireless technology while investing heavily in new markets that have different customers, business models and competitive dynamics. The expansion into data centres will be particularly important because it puts the company against established computing infrastructure providers with enormous scale.

Yet Amon enters this next phase with an unusual advantage. He has spent more than three decades inside Qualcomm and has experienced several major technology transitions from within the organisation. He helped lead the company through the rise of 5G and its expansion beyond smartphones before becoming CEO. His current strategy represents another extension of that same pattern of reinvention.

The defining question for Amon is therefore not whether Qualcomm can remain successful in smartphones. It is whether the company can become one of the essential computing platforms of the intelligent era. Its technology already reaches billions of connected devices, while its expanding presence in cars, PCs, industrial systems and AI creates opportunities across an increasingly broad technology landscape.
